There is no fixed amount for "making a webshop accessible," and any provider who quotes you one is selling an estimate without having looked at your site. The costs are determined by three things: how many deviations from WCAG 2.1 level AA exist in your specific webshop, how those deviations are technically resolved (a simple CSS problem or a completely outdated theme), and who performs the work. What is certain: the technical requirement is the same EN 301 549 standard everywhere, and it has been enforceable in all Member States since 28 June 2025.
The most useful thing you can do beforehand is not to ask for a price but to get a list. A scan that pinpoints exactly where the bottlenecks are — the checkout process, the login screen, a form without labels — gives a developer something to base a quote on. Without that list, everyone estimates blindly.
Where the amount comes from
The price of remedial work depends heavily on the layer in which the problem sits. A missing alt attribute on a product image or a label not linked to an input field can usually be fixed in minutes per element. A checkout process that technically cannot be navigated using only a keyboard, or a theme with contrast values hardcoded in the source code, affects the site's structure and requires real development work. The deeper the problem lies in the platform, the higher the invoice from the party fixing it.
The number of templates also matters, not the number of pages. One hundred product pages all using the same template cost roughly the same remedial time as ten, because you work at the source once. A webshop with many custom components — a configurator, a custom payment widget, videos without subtitles — has more individual parts that each need to be reviewed and adapted.
What determines whether it will be little or much
Standard platforms such as common webshop systems generally already have a solid foundation in their core themes, as long as you don't use a heavily customized theme or standalone plugins that operate outside that base. Custom-built work, older codebases, and third-party widgets are more often where costs mount up, simply because no one actively maintains them anymore.
Another point that keeps costs down or drives them up: is there already a prioritized list, or does someone first need to figure out what is wrong? Repair without a clear problem list almost always costs more, because a developer then has to search and guess where to start.
What axessia does and does not do for you
It is important for you to know that axessia.eu does not perform manual audits or remedial work. We test your webshop automatically, including the checkout process and login flow in the full scan, prioritize the identified bottlenecks in plain language, document the required accessibility statement and improvement plan, and monitor whether everything remains accessible after changes. The actual remedial work — adjusting code, adding labels, adjusting contrast — is the responsibility of your own developer or agency, and the costs therefore flow through that party, not through us.
What we always mention: an automatic scan cannot test all requirements, and that is stated in every report. This means the report is a good starting point for a quote, but not automatically a complete picture of all costs you will face. Also remember that an accessibility overlay is not a replacement for real remedial work; it does not solve underlying problems, however attractive the price may seem.
As for the costs of our own services: you will find them clearly laid out on our pricing page, separate from what external repair will cost you.
Costs after going live
Accessibility is not a project you complete and forget about. Every change to your webshop — a new theme component, an updated checkout, a new widget — can reintroduce compliance issues. Companies that systematically monitor these changes typically spend less than companies that only address everything at once after a complaint or letter from a market surveillance authority. Systematic monitoring is therefore itself a cost, but usually a more predictable one than a large remediation effort afterwards.
